Is this a last minute writing prompt? Yes. But what’s wrong with last minute? As a society, we place so much value in productivity. Any activity that doesn’t contribute to productivity is thought of as time wasting.
These ideas are so pervasive I’m sure we’ve all felt guilt over spending an hour watching youtube, sleeping in late one morning, or checking Twitter. The idea seems to be that these activities are all fine, but only as long as you’re productive enough.

Name of the game: Extreme Fire Starter or Double Fire Starter (thoughts?)
The rules: Read the two sentences. Your piece must start with one sentence and end with the other–the order is for you to choose. Try and do it in 10 minutes by setting a timer and just going for it.

After you’ve written something, you can read what I came up with here. I changed a few words because my brain can’t leave the stories alone, as much as I try not to edit these prompts…
I was joined by my sister and some friends. My sister is keeping hers to possibly submit somewhere! However, here and here are the two stories my friends wrote. The second story was dictated to a phone and unedited–I think it works really well with almost no punctuation!

For today’s writing prompt, I tried using a sentence generator. Whilst more open-ended than my usual prompts, it seemed to be sufficiently story-prompting. At least, it seemed better than the automatic sentence the generator starts with: “If the bunny rabbit and the tooth fairy had babies, would they take your teeth and leave chocolate for you?” Sorry–what? I have so many questions…

The rules: Write the supplied sentence/sentence fragment at the top of your page, (computer, notebook, etc. Whatever you prefer) set a timer for 10 minutes and start writing whatever you think would follow that first sentence.

My year started wonderfully with friends, champagne, and games. These included Pass the Parcel, a very British party game which seems to me like an excuse to throw things at family members (I promise I do actually enjoy it).
Of course, now it’s time for me to dive head first into revision in order to pass my exams, starting with evolutionary biology–timed-essay style–on the 14th. But before that, here’s a writing prompt!

October. Colourful trees, pumpkins, the return of thick blankets and that annoying sound the radiator makes at 3am. Three weeks into my second year at uni and goodness is it hard to fit writing into my full workload. But here I am, doing writing prompt #7.
Whatever pile of revision or deadlines or life obligations are eating away at your soul, just step away for a moment. Take a deep breath. Set a timer for 10 minutes and just write. I felt like trying something new today.
I’ve been lazy with posts this April, mostly because any writing at all just seemed like extra work. I figured that extra work was not something I needed when studying for exams, rehearsing for a drama performance, and dealing with the rest of life. It seemed like a decent-enough excuse to me.
